🫁 Module 3: Breathing and Voice Control

In Module 2 you learned that respiration is the power source behind every word you speak. This module turns that theory into a physical skill: how to breathe correctly for speech, sustain your voice across a full sentence, project without straining, and control your speaking pace.

1. Diaphragmatic Breathing

The diaphragm is a large dome-shaped muscle beneath your lungs. When it contracts and flattens, it pulls air deep into the lower lungs — giving you a much bigger, steadier air supply than breathing into your chest alone.

Inhale Low

Breathe in through your nose, letting your belly (not your shoulders) rise. Your diaphragm drops and draws air deep into your lungs.

Support

As you speak, your diaphragm rises slowly and steadily, gently pushing air out under control rather than collapsing all at once.

Reset

At a natural pause, take another low breath before your supply runs out — not after you're already gasping.

💡 Quick test: lie on your back and place a book on your stomach. Breathe normally — if the book rises and falls, you're already breathing diaphragmatically while lying down. The goal is to recreate that same low breath while sitting or standing.

2. Breath Support

Breath support is the skill of controlling your exhale so it lasts exactly as long as you need it to — no more, no less. Poor breath support shows up as:

  • Running out of air mid-sentence and trailing off
  • Rushing the end of long sentences to "make it" to the next breath
  • A shaky or wavering voice on longer words
  • Gasping audibly between phrases

Breath grouping is the practical fix: instead of trying to say an entire long sentence on one breath, break it into natural phrase chunks and take a quick, quiet breath at each comma or logical pause — e.g. "Thank you for calling Skailit Academy, / my name is Sarah, / how can I help you today?" Each "/" is a natural breath point.

3. Voice Projection

Projection is often confused with volume, but shouting strains your voice and is exhausting to sustain. True projection comes from breath support and resonance, not from forcing your throat.

  • Breath-powered volume: A strong, supported exhale naturally produces a fuller sound without throat strain.
  • Resonance: Letting sound vibrate freely in your chest, throat, and mouth (rather than being squeezed out) makes your voice carry further with less effort.
  • Open mouth and relaxed jaw: A tense, barely-open mouth traps sound. Opening up releases it.

💡 If your throat feels tired or sore after a normal day of talking, you are very likely projecting from your throat instead of your breath. This is a habit, and it is fully retrainable.

4. Controlling Speaking Pace

Pace and breathing are directly linked — shallow breathing forces rushed speech, because you're racing to finish before you run out of air. Fixing your breath support is often the fastest way to fix a pace problem.

  • Average conversational pace is roughly 120–150 words per minute. Faster than that starts to reduce clarity for most listeners.
  • Natural pauses at commas, full stops, and between ideas give your listener time to process what you've said — and give you time to take your next low breath.
  • Nervous speeding is common under pressure (phone calls, presentations). Consciously building in pause points ahead of time counteracts this.

Exercise 2: Breath & Voice Control Drill

Do each exercise below out loud, right now, and honestly report what you noticed. This builds the physical awareness that reading alone can't give you.

Do: Place a hand on your belly. Breathe in slowly through your nose for 4 counts. Check for: did your belly visibly rise more than your shoulders?

Do: Take a low breath, then make a steady "sssss" sound for as long as you can, keeping the volume even. Check for: could you hold it for at least 15 seconds without the sound wavering?

Say: "Thank you for calling Skailit Academy, my name is [your name], how can I help you today?" using a breath at each comma. Check for: did you make it through without gasping or rushing the last part?

Say: a sentence of your choice at a comfortable volume, without raising your throat tension. Check for: could a person across a normal-sized room hear you clearly without you straining?

Do: Read this sentence out loud at what feels like your normal pace: "Please hold the line while I transfer your call to the correct department." Check for: did you consciously pause at all, or did it come out in one rushed burst?
